Dr. Joel Biermann explores sabbath in all aspects of life

“Remember the Sabbath Day.” We have learned that this means that we should go to church and pay attention.  But the third commandment has still more to offer, and a closer look at the command soon moves beyond Sunday morning into all of life. God’s directive calls us to consider big and essential questions like “What does it mean to be human?” and “What’s the point of life?” These profound questions concern every person every day.

We all work, we all rest, and we all need and must choose some direction or purpose in our working and resting and playing. All these ideas are tied up in the meaning of sabbath. The implications for life are profound, not only for our daily lives now, but also for the shape of our entire earthly lives and even our eternal lives in the new heavens and earth.

Dr. Joel Biermann, the Waldemar A. and June Schuette Professor of Systematic Theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, will discuss a broader understanding of sabbath from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 1005 First St., West Fargo, ND, 58078. The event is free. A lunch will be served with a freewill offering to defray costs. Please RSVP at office@bslcfargo.org or call (701)293-1047.

Dr. Biermann also will preach at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church’s Sunday services at 8:15 and 10:45 a.m. Sunday, March 15, and will present during the education hour from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Beautiful Savior is located at 2601 23rd Ave. S., Fargo, ND, 58103.

Join Dr. Biermann for some sabbath work as he guides an exploration of these important truths at the heart of God’s plan for his creation. A faculty member of Concordia Seminary, St Louis, since 2002, Dr. Biermann teaches doctrinal theology with a special interest and emphasis centered on ethics and the correct role of the Law in the life of the believer.
